Unfortunately either way it is a time consuming process, so I just end up running it over night
On average, it takes me about 8-10 hours to encode to mkv based on the settings I choose for Ripbot, with Xvid using similar settings it took close to 15 hours. Try Ripbot and compare the time to encode, I found it much quicker then Xvid4PSP. I also want to do a back to back comparison to see how noticable the difference in quality it is streaming the raw m2ts vs the mkv. Is the most common one the 8GB? There's also two listed one turbo and one ultra. I need to read up and understand what all the options are/do as there are dozens of x264 settings. It was using x264.exe and while it appeared to max out all four cores on my Q6600 its encoding speed was around 10-15fps. I need to figure out a way to encode faster with it though. I just started playing with Xvid4PSP, seams pretty neat.
